Sustainable Production
At Coconut Bowls sustainability is at the core of everything that we do, that means beyond just environmental sustainability, but also economic and social sustainability. As Coconuts do not grow commercially in many western countries, like Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK and Europe - we work predominantly in Vietnam and Indonesia, in remote regions where locals struggle to find steady work, and generally live day to day on a very low income.
Providing jobs, and improving the incomes of coconut farmers and artisans in these regions is just as important to us, as environmental sustainability.
The ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) Base Code is a globally recognised code of positive labour practices and the set of guidelines that we follow to ensure the working conditions and rights of workers.
While our products are made from reclaimed natural waste, we are determined to improve the lives of coconut farmers, families that live off as little as USD$5 per day. These coconut farmers collect and sort coconut shells for us, to ensure we’re sourcing the thickest, strongest and highest quality coconut shells. We pay these farmers at a price that they nominate and we do not negotiate.
At times we collect more than 10,000 coconut shells, which means that thanks to you and the popularity of our Coconut Bowls, these farmers are now earning thousands of dollars for what was previously their waste.
Fair Trade and the ETI Base Code set ethical wage and income standards, which at a minimum, means national legal standards or industry benchmark standards are met. These wages are designed to always be enough to meet basic needs and to provide some discretionary income. Our artisans are paid a minimum of 30% above these industry standards.
