Tell us a bit about yourselves!
We're Vic and Chris, from Montreal, Canada. We spend our time cooking, travelling, and hanging out with our husky, Blizzard. We have a passion for veganism and we love animals, so hopefully, some of what we love about this gives you a little boost if you need one :)
When did you start your Instagram page @ehvegan and what inspired you to start?
We started in May 2016. We'd been vegetarian a while, and struggled sticking with veganism. After a trip to LA, where veganism is so common, we decided to try again and stick with it. We started the Instagram account to hold ourselves accountable and inspire others to do the same.
What are the biggest challenges and greatest rewards of being a food/lifestyle blogger?
Creating content is tough! It takes time to prep, shoot, and edit all of our photos. And we hardly ever eat warm food. And we're those annoying people at restaurants. Oh well, comes with the gig! The greatest reward is all the new people we've met. It's amazing how strong the vegan community is on Instagram. We've turned so many online connections, into real life meetups and made lifelong friends because of it!
We can tell you guys adore animals! Is this part of your reason for leading a vegan lifestyle?
It's really the only reason we went vegetarian, and then the only reason we went vegan. It was such an eye-opening moment to suddenly realize that we reasons we went vegetarian, were the exact same reasons to go vegan. Now, looking back, I can't even imagine living any differently than this.
You are known amongst the Instagram foodie community for the fun and inspiring messages you create in your smoothie bowls, made out of fruit! How did this all start?
Vic says she had a dream and woke up wanting to make word bowls lol. Our first one was Hello 2017. It got lots of love and we thought we might be on to something people would enjoy, so we started to find ways to inspire people with word bowls. Now we do make sassy toast too, because you can't always be inspiring!
Your photos are always styled so nicely, what tips and tricks can you share to assist in creating such great images?
Light light, baby! (say à la Vanilla Ice). Seriously though, we're all about the natural light. Anytime we have mornings off, we're shooting content right by our windows, using white boards to bounce light and minimize shadows. The rest is playing with the shot through the lens of the camera, not just your eye. You need to know what the camera sees. A tripod can help with that.
We know you are passionate travellers, what are your top three favourite destinations?
Hawaii is a beautiful place. So green, gorgeous oceans, incredible wildlife! Sea turtles for days! There were plenty of vegan options where we visited in Maui and Oahu North Shore. Belize is a spot we only got to spend a day, but it was one of the most beautiful ones we've ever spent anywhere. Such wonderful, warm people and again, amazing wildlife. Snorkeling with rays and nurse sharks is something you never forget. Switzerland will round out the top 3. There's so much history, it doesn't feel crowded. The landscape varies so much from region to region, but the Alps are without question the highlight. We spent 10 days in different parts of the country and can't wait to go back.
You serve up some pretty amazing dishes in our Coconut Bowls! What has been your favourite so far?
Buddha bowls all day long. Rice, noodles, quinoa. Tofu, tempeh, soy protein. Veggies, veggies, veggies. And sauce! Usually something tangy/sweet. We love building bowls. Did you think we were gonna say smoothie bowls? ;)
What is your favourite thing about your coconut bowls?
They harder to break than porcelain bowls! :D But actually, to be able to use another eco-friendly option in the kitchen is great. We're cutting more and more plastic and new products full of packaging from our life. Coconut bowls are such a natural fit.
We are so excited to have one of your recipes included in our new cookbook ‘Vegan Bowls for Vegan Souls’. Tell us about the recipe you chose and what it means for you to be apart of the book?
Vegan mac and cheese is a recipe that helped us transition. It satisfied a lot of cravings and kept on the wagon until we could ditch the dairy addiction. It's such a comforting food, and we're always hopeful that it's a recipe people can make again and again, without feeling like they've had to give anything up to live this way.
